Saturday, April 17: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Men's March. This march, hosted by Western Men Against Violence, asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes to bring attention to something that can be difficult to talk about: violence against women. 11am, WWU-Red Square and ends at Boundary Bay for a post-march party!
Friday, April 23: Whatcom County’s Fifth Annual Denim Day. In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. The Justices stated that since removing jeans "...is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might," the victim must have assisted the attacker in removing her jeans, which they felt implied consent. Denim Day began as a heated response to this verdict. However, it has now evolved into an internationally celebrated day to show your support for ending sexual violence, honoring survivors and raising awareness of the issue. Participate by wearing jeans to work/school!
Sunday, April 25: The documentary, Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, will be shown at the Wild Buffalo. This film goes beyond the glitz of hip-hop to explore gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback-turned-activist. Great film! 8pm, Wild Buffalo.
Friday, April 30: Victory Over Violence Luncheon. This inspiring luncheon celebrate survivors' victories over violence and supports the essential crisis intervention and prevention education services provided by DVSAS. This year, we are pleased to host Lane Judson as the keynote speaker. Lane Judson’s daughter, Crystal Brame, was killed in a domestic violence murder-suicide in 2003 by her husband, the police chief of the Tacoma Police Department. 11:30am-1:15pm, Northwood Hall. Free, donations requested during event. |
