Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County (DVSAS) is a private, volunteer based, non-profit organization that has been serving the needs of victims of abuse and assault in our community since 1979. DVSAS was formally known as Whatcom Crisis services and was formed in 1979 when four agencies merged to create a comprehensive community response to violence. The four agencies were the Battered Women’s Project, Rape Relief of Whatcom County, Sun Crisis Center Hotline and the Flying Squad.

In 1998, the agency under went a comprehensive strategic planning process that involved the entire agency and community. The primary purpose of strategic planning was to assist the agency in focusing its resources to provide the most appropriate, quality services to Whatcom County. The planning process resulted in the agency deciding to transition out of general crisis intervention and focus on sexual assault and domestic violence services. Since that time, the agency has been designated by the State of Washington as the Whatcom County Community Sexual Assault Program (CSAP) and the Domestic Violence Program has a long history of providing community based advocacy and group services.
The agency provides free and confidential crisis intervention, support services, and prevention education to all victims of abuse and assault regardless of race, color, religion, disability, pregnancy, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, age, ethnicity, income, veteran status, marital status, or any other basis prohibited by federal, state or local law. In 2006, the agency provided direct services to over 3,500 unduplicated individuals.
